About

Jacob’s career as a software engineer began at age 15 building software for the MIT Physical Oceanography department. He studied philology at Reed College, but dropped out to become the lead programmer for the Perseus Project at Harvard in 1991, thus beginning his career as a data scientist. At Perseus, Jacob spent 4 years building software for digital humanities scholarship. Along the way Jacob received a MS in Mathematics from Tufts University in 1995. In the mid 1990s, Jacob spent many years as a research engineer building software for video games at Maxis and motion picture effects at Disney and Digital Domain. In 2003 Jacob earned an MBA from UCLA with a focus on quantitative social science. Jacob spent four years as a research scientist at Yahoo!, and the subsequent decade marrying the quantitative social sciences with deep expertise in the computational analysis of text, focusing mostly on learning alpha (and betas) from text for quant finance. He consulted for many FinTech startups, hedge funds, investment banks and financial data providers before forming a research group within Thomson Reuters Corporate R&D in 2011. Jacob joined Capital One Labs in 2014, and at the end of 2015 Jacob joined the Capital One credit card business where he leads a group of data scientists and analysts focused on making our customers’ experiences using our credit cards to pay as safe, easy and rewarding as possible. Jacob sits on the board of directors for Santa Clara University’s data science program and is a member of the Yudansha-kai at the Aikido Center of Los Angeles. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife and two children.
